However, after learning, hackers attempting to alter the final vote totals, NASA says on April 29 it has to shut down the voting portion of the OPSPARC Challenge, which hopes to ignite creative thinking in children.

But to attack a particular student team on the race and to encourage others to disrupt the contest and manipulate the vote, and the attempt to managing the election occurring shortly after those posts, NASA says in a statement.
The Washington Post is reporting on Wednesday that the hackers targeting a team of students from Washington, DC’s Banneker High School who is creating a product that can purify school systems water by checking for chemicals such as chlorine.
The Banneker team was among eight finalists to win the challenge.
Before the voting is ends, members of the public were using social media to generating support for a particular team in the public voting.
NASA is supporting this kind of community to encouraging students to engage with the science, technology, engineering, and math and recognizes social media as an essential tool for the supports.
The challenging team has an accurate record of the voting results before the attempting disruption, NASA says.
By the judging criteria and voting procedures stating in OPSPARC website, a panel of NASA Goddard judges will make a final determination of winners using the publishing rubrics, it adds.
The results are slating to be announcing this month.
